Sesame Street Is Back for Its Historic 50th Season

A sunny day is sweeping the clouds away on November 9, because Sesame Street is back for its 50th year of educating and entertaining young minds. The landmark season will include visits from plenty of celebrity guests, all helping to explore the stresses and pressures kids face today.

For the hit show’s 50th anniversary, they’re bringing in big guest names, including Chrissy Teigen, Charlie Puth, Dave Grohl, Maren Morris, Misty Copeland, Micheal Che, and Chloe Kim - but that’s not all. The season will open with a star-studded prime-time special that will be hosted by Joseph Gordon Levitt and include visits from Whoopi Goldberg, Patti LaBelle, Elvis Costello, Meghan Trainor, Sterling K. Brown, Norah Jones, Nile Rodgers and Itzhak Perlman.

““We can’t wait to share this season with families and fans of all ages,” Ben Lehmann, executive producer of Sesame Street, said in a press release. “Even as we take time to look back and honor our history, we keep innovating to bring today’s preschool kids something that’s tailored just for them [while] holding on to all the fundamentals that make Sesame Street so magical.”

To address the issues facing today’s kids, this year’s season of Sesame Street will focus on the high expectations often set for them, and emphasize the importance of giving kids room to make mistakes.

“Today’s preschool kids are under an unprecedented amount of stress and pressure to meet certain academic and social-emotional benchmarks, often before they’re developmentally ready,” said Rosemarie Truglio, Ph.D., Sesame Workshop’s senior vice president for curriculum and content, in the release. “That result-oriented mindset can make kids afraid to take even the safest risks - never trying to pour their own milk for fear of spilling it.”

The season’s “Oops and Aha!: Embracing the Power of Possibilities” curriculum will model positive thinking, self-confidence and perseverance, offering kids and parents a fun way to practice essential self-regulation strategies and creative thinking skills.

For the first time in 20 years, a new neighbor will also be making her debut: 8-year-old Charlotte, called “Charlie” by her friends, a military child who has just moved into the neighborhood with her family.

Along with Charlie’s arrival, the season will also include a special segment titled Big Bird’s Road Trip, during which Big Bird will tour the country to find out what kids love about where they live.

“As we mark our 50th season, we want to remind families everywhere of the timeless lessons Sesame Street has always taught,” said Steve Youngwood, president of media & education and COO of Sesame Workshop. “Everyone, no matter where they are from, is equally deserving of respect, opportunity and joy.”

The first regular episode of the season will air on Saturday, November 16 on HBO.
